Vettri Payanam Scheme 2026: Which Buses Are Free for Women in Tamil Nadu?

Daily bus fares add up quickly, particularly for women travelling to work, college or hospital across district borders. Since 2 October 2026, the Vettri Payanam scheme has widened free bus travel for women and transgender persons in Tamil Nadu. Buses that were not part of the older scheme, such as Express and Deluxe services, are now included.

You may see the name spelled Vetri Payanam or Vettri Payanam Thittam. They all refer to this scheme, which was launched by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay from Koyambedu in Chennai.

Vettri Payanam at a glance

  • Launch date: 2 October 2026
  • Who can travel free: women and transgender persons
  • Buses covered: about 12,700 of about 18,400 state transport buses
  • Expected daily beneficiaries: about 84 lakh women, according to reports
  • Income limit: none reported
  • Earlier scheme: Vidiyal Payanam

Which buses are free under Vettri Payanam?

Reports on the launch list these categories:

  • Ordinary city and town buses
  • Express buses in metropolitan and urban areas
  • Limited Stop Service (LSS) buses
  • Deluxe buses in metropolitan and urban areas
  • Mofussil Ordinary buses
  • Ghat Ordinary buses, including routes beyond 40 km

Because around 5,700 buses are not part of the scheme, you should look at the bus type before boarding, especially for premium and long-distance services. If you are unsure, ask the conductor at the stand before you get in.

How the free ticket works

Women and transgender passengers board an eligible bus and tell the conductor they are travelling under the scheme. Reports say Electronic Ticketing Machines are used for zero-fare tickets, which helps the transport corporation count passengers. Take the ticket if the conductor gives you one. There is no separate online form or application to fill.

Carry an ID on longer trips. It is a simple habit that can help avoid any dispute during your journey.

What changed from Vidiyal Payanam?

Vidiyal Payanam, launched in 2021, focused on ordinary city buses and certain ordinary hill services. For many women, that meant paying as soon as they had to take an Express or a longer-distance bus. Vettri Payanam extends zero-fare travel to more of these services, which is especially helpful for inter-district journeys.

How much can you save?

Savings depend on your route. Someone who spends ₹40 a day on bus fare, for 25 working days a month, could save about ₹1,000 a month if her buses are covered. For a working woman or a student's family, that is real money for food, medicine or school needs.

How to check bus timings

  • Chennai: use the MTC website to look up routes and timings.
  • Other routes: check the TNSTC website or ask at your bus stand.
  • Apps: apps such as Townbus can help you look up local timings, but they are not official sources and may not always be updated.

Allow extra time during festivals and peak hours, since buses may be more crowded now that more passengers can travel free.

Common questions

Do women from other states get free travel? Reports differ in how they describe this. Ask the conductor or transport office if you are visiting from another state.

Are children included? Bus rules for children are separate, so check with the conductor.

What about men accompanying a woman? The free travel applies to women and transgender persons. Men pay the usual fare.

Are private buses included? The scheme covers government transport corporation buses.
