How to Update Your Mobile Number in Driving Licence Online: Step-by-Step Guide

Most Driving Licence services now send OTPs and alerts to your registered mobile number. If yours is linked to an old SIM, you may get stuck when renewing your licence or applying for another service. The good news is that you can often update it online through the official Parivahan Sarathi portal, without visiting an RTO.
This guide takes you through the process and explains what to do if the online method does not work for your licence.
Why you should update your number
- OTPs for licence services come to this number.
- You receive important notices and updates related to your licence.
- E-challan and transport messages are easier to track.
- Renewal and other services go more smoothly.
If somebody else now uses your old number, your messages may reach them, so it is worth updating soon.
What you need before you start
- Your Driving Licence number
- Date of birth as on your licence
- Your new mobile number, switched on and with you
- Aadhaar-linked mobile access, if your state uses Aadhaar authentication
- A copy of your licence, if a document upload is requested
The services shown can differ by state and RTO, so your screen may not look exactly as described here.
How to update your mobile number online
- Open the official Sarathi portal.
- Select the state where your licence is registered.
- Open the Driving Licence services section.
- Look for the option to update or modify your mobile number. It may be listed under "Others" or similar headings.
- Enter your licence number, date of birth and any other requested details.
- Enter the new mobile number and verify it with the OTP.
- Submit the request and save the acknowledgement or reference number.
- Check the status later to make sure the number has changed.
Common problems and fixes
- Licence details not found: Check the format of your licence number. Older licences may need to be converted to digital records at your RTO before you can use online services.
- OTP not arriving: Check signal and storage, then try later. The portal can be slow during busy hours.
- Name or date of birth mismatch: Correct your licence details through the RTO first.
- Option missing: Your state or RTO may not offer it for your case, so contact the RTO.
- Old number is already linked and lost: You may need to complete identity verification or visit the RTO.
If you have to visit the RTO
Take your original Driving Licence, Aadhaar card, the new mobile number and a copy of each document. Ask at the enquiry counter which form you need. Keep the receipt or acknowledgement for your records.
After updating your number
Log in again or try a service that sends an OTP, to confirm that it reaches the new number. Add your licence to DigiLocker or the mParivahan app if you have not done so, as they can be handy when you are stopped for a check.
Stay safe from fake transport websites
Many private websites look like government portals and charge a fee to "update" your details. Look at the address before entering anything. The official transport sites use parivahan.gov.in. Do not share OTPs on calls, even if the caller claims to be from the RTO. Also be careful of SMS messages asking you to pay a fake challan through a link.
Common questions
Can I update my number from home? In many cases, yes. It depends on your state and how your details are stored.
Is there a fee? Fees, if any, will appear in the official portal. Avoid agents and lookalike sites that add extra charges.
How long does it take? It can be quick when verified online, but a manual check may take longer.
Do I get a new licence? A number update generally does not change your licence number.
Is the RC mobile number updated automatically? Treat your vehicle RC separately. Check the vehicle services section on Parivahan to update it too.
