Free Tailoring Machine Scheme for Women: How PM Vishwakarma Works and How to Apply

A sewing machine can turn a room at home into a small business. Blouse stitching, school uniforms and alterations can bring in steady income for women in villages and towns. That is why so many people search for the "free tailoring machine scheme".

The main central government route is the PM Vishwakarma scheme, which includes tailors (darzi) among its traditional trades. It helps with training, a toolkit incentive and low-interest loans. Your state, district or welfare board may also run separate sewing machine schemes from time to time.

What does PM Vishwakarma give tailors?

  • Skill training: basic training, with a stipend of ₹500 per day during training
  • Toolkit incentive: an e-voucher of up to ₹15,000, which can be used for tools such as a sewing machine
  • Collateral-free loans: up to ₹1 lakh in the first stage and ₹2 lakh in the second, at a concessional 5% interest
  • Recognition: a PM Vishwakarma certificate and ID card
  • Digital and marketing support: incentives for digital transactions, and help with marketing

So the benefit is usually a voucher towards tools, and not a machine delivered to your home. Check the amount shown in your account after you are approved.

Who can apply?

  • You should be at least 18 years old.
  • You should already be working as a tailor or in another listed trade, on a self-employed basis.
  • You should not have taken certain central or state loans for business development in the last five years, unless you have repaid them or the rules allow it.
  • Generally, only one member of a family can get the benefit.
  • People in government service and their families are not eligible.

The exact rules are on the official portal, so check them before you apply.

Documents you need

  • Aadhaar card
  • Mobile number linked to Aadhaar
  • Bank passbook
  • Ration card or family details
  • Community certificate, if applicable
  • Passport-size photo

How to apply for PM Vishwakarma

Registration is done through Common Service Centres (CSCs), usually with biometric Aadhaar verification.

  1. Take your documents to your nearest CSC.
  2. Ask the operator to register you on the PM Vishwakarma portal.
  3. Choose tailor (darzi) as your trade and fill in your details.
  4. Complete Aadhaar verification and submit the form.
  5. Your application goes through verification at the local body, district and state levels.
  6. After approval, you will receive your certificate and ID, followed by details about training and the toolkit.

Keep your application number safe, and check your status on the portal.

Other ways to get a sewing machine

  • Social welfare schemes: Tamil Nadu has offered sewing machines through welfare departments to certain groups, such as widows, deserted women and persons with disabilities. Ask your District Social Welfare Office whether a scheme is open.
  • Welfare boards: If you are registered with a tailoring workers' welfare board, ask about assistance available to members.
  • Self Help Groups: SHG members can ask their group or block office about livelihood loans and training.

How much can you earn?

This varies with your skill and location. Blouse stitching with lining and designs can earn much more than simple alterations. Instead of depending on one type of work, try offering school uniforms in June, wedding blouses during the season and alterations all year round. A photo gallery of your work on WhatsApp can help you get new customers without any advertising costs.

Which machine should you buy?

Think about your work before choosing. A sturdy manual machine costs less and works without electricity, and a motor saves effort if you stitch for many hours. If you plan to take bulk orders, ask local tailors which brands are easy to service nearby. Keep your bill, because you may need it later.

Avoid sewing machine scams

Be careful of websites that ask you to pay a "registration fee" for a free machine, or social media pages collecting Aadhaar photos. Applications should go through the official portal, a CSC or a government office. If an operator charges a fee, ask what it covers and whether a receipt will be given.

Common questions

Is the machine completely free? PM Vishwakarma gives a toolkit incentive of up to ₹15,000 as an e-voucher, not a guaranteed free machine.

Can a beginner apply? The scheme is for people already working in the trade. Beginners can ask about other skill training programmes.

Can men apply? Yes. PM Vishwakarma is not limited to women.
