Free Milch Cow Scheme Tamil Nadu 2026: Who May Benefit and What to Do Now

A single milch cow can give a rural family daily milk and a regular income. That is why the Tamil Nadu Budget announcement on free cows has drawn so much attention in villages.

In its 2026-27 Budget, presented on 5 August 2026, the government announced the return of the free milch cow scheme. Here is what we know, what is still unclear and how you can prepare.

What was announced?

  • Benefit: Free milch cows
  • Who: 10,000 eligible women every year
  • Budget allocation: ₹57 crore
  • Department: Animal husbandry

The Budget also announced a separate livestock insurance scheme, Kaalnadaigal Kaappom, with ₹31 crore. The Vetri Magalir scheme for goats or sheep is a different benefit, so check which one you are applying for.

Who will be eligible?

The Budget report we checked says "eligible women", but it does not list the full conditions. Earlier state cattle schemes focused on poor rural women, but the new rules may differ. Do not assume that you qualify until the official guidelines are published.

Only 10,000 women are covered each year across the whole state. Selection may be competitive, so meeting the conditions may not guarantee a cow.

What to keep ready

Official requirements are not confirmed, but these documents are commonly requested for welfare schemes:

  • Aadhaar card
  • Family or ration card
  • Income and community certificate, if applicable
  • Bank passbook
  • A mobile number linked to Aadhaar

Make sure your name and address match across these documents. It can save time when applications open.

How to apply

We could not find an official application link for this scheme. When applications open, details are likely to come through the Animal Husbandry Department or your district administration. For now, ask your local veterinary dispensary, block office or Taluk office whether a list is being prepared.

Before you accept a cow

Think about what the animal will need every day. A cow needs fodder, clean water, a shed and regular veterinary care. Ask who can guide you on milk sales through your local cooperative society, and ask whether insurance is included. These costs matter just as much as the free animal.

Stay safe from fake applications

When a new scheme becomes popular, fake websites and agents appear quickly. Do not pay anyone who promises guaranteed selection, and never share an OTP, UPI PIN or bank password. Wait for an official notification, then apply only through the official website or the concerned government office. Your local e-Sevai centre or Taluk office can also tell you whether applications have opened.

Common questions

Will every woman get a cow? No. The announced number is 10,000 women a year.

Can I apply online now? We have not found an official online application.

Is this the same as the goat scheme? No. It is announced separately.
