₹5 Lakh Subsidy for Self Help Groups: Singappenngal Scheme and Support for Women Entrepreneurs
Thousands of women in Tamil Nadu have built small businesses through Self Help Groups, from snacks and tailoring to farm products. Their biggest obstacle is often the money needed to grow.
The state's 2026-27 Budget announced new support for these enterprises. Here is what was said and how your group can prepare.
What was announced?
- Singappenngal Valimaippaduthum Thittam: An investment subsidy of ₹5 lakh for eligible SHG enterprises
- SHG credit target: ₹38,000 crore under the Annual Credit Plan
- Tamil Nadu Women Entrepreneurs Empowerment Scheme: ₹225 crore
- Process: Loan and subsidy sanctions are to be fully computerised

The report says "eligible SHG enterprises", without giving the full conditions. Your group's records are likely to matter, so make sure they are in good order.
How your group can prepare
- Keep records up to date: Minutes, savings, loans and repayments.
- Check your bank account: Make sure the signatories and KYC are correct.
- Write a simple business plan: What you will sell, to whom, your costs and your expected income.
- Register your business if appropriate: Udyam registration is free, and food businesses may also need an FSSAI registration or licence.
- Meet your block or district officials: Ask the Mahalir Thittam office about current schemes.

What makes a strong business plan?
Keep it simple and honest. Show who your customers are, how much you can produce and how you will repay any loan. Get quotes for the machines you need, and start at a size your group can manage. A smaller business with steady orders is better than a large loan with no market.
Stay safe from fake applications
When a new scheme becomes popular, fake websites and agents appear quickly. Do not pay anyone who promises guaranteed selection, and never share an OTP, UPI PIN or bank password. Wait for an official notification, then apply only through the official website or the concerned government office. Your local e-Sevai centre or Taluk office can also tell you whether applications have opened.
