Thai Maaman Thanga Mothiram: 1 Gram Gold Ring for Babies Born in Government Hospitals

The birth of a child is a big moment for any family, and for many, the cost of hospital care is a real worry. Tamil Nadu's new gold ring scheme is meant to mark that moment for babies born in government hospitals.

The Thai Maaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam was included in the state's 2026-27 Budget. Here is what parents should know.

What was announced?

  • Benefit: A 1 gram gold ring for the newborn
  • Who: Children born in government hospitals to families permanently residing in Tamil Nadu
  • Budget allocation: ₹560 crore

What parents should check

The Budget report we checked does not explain every step. Before your delivery, ask the staff at your government hospital:

  1. Has the scheme started at this hospital?
  2. Does it cover babies born on a particular date or after?
  3. What proof of residence do you need?
  4. How and when is the ring given?
  5. Do you need to fill out a form?

Keep your Aadhaar, family card and pregnancy record ready. These are the documents parents commonly carry for hospital and maternity benefits, but the hospital will tell you what is required.

Is it for private hospital births?

The announcement refers to government hospitals. If you plan to deliver at a private hospital, do not assume that you are covered.

Other support announced for mothers

The same Budget announced Thai Care centres, where pregnant women nearing delivery can stay and receive free accommodation, food, medical care and health monitoring. ₹23 crore was allocated for these centres. Ask your Village Health Nurse or nearest government hospital if one is available in your area.

Your Village Health Nurse is also a good person to ask about antenatal check-ups and other maternity benefits that you may qualify for.

Choosing where to deliver

A gold ring should not be the reason to choose a hospital. Choose the place your doctor recommends, especially if your pregnancy is high risk, and make sure you can reach it quickly when labour starts. In an emergency, call 108 for an ambulance.

Stay safe from fake applications

When a new scheme becomes popular, fake websites and agents appear quickly. Do not pay anyone who promises guaranteed selection, and never share an OTP, UPI PIN or bank password. Wait for an official notification, then apply only through the official website or the concerned government office. Your local e-Sevai centre or Taluk office can also tell you whether applications have opened.

Common questions

Do I need to apply online? We have not found an official online form. Ask at your government hospital.

Will the ring be given immediately? The report does not say. Ask the hospital.

Does it apply to all children in the family? The announcement says every child born in a government hospital to eligible families, but check the official rules.
