200 Units Free Electricity in Tamil Nadu: What the 2026 Budget Means for Your EB Bill

For many families, the EB bill is one of the biggest monthly worries, especially in summer. So the news of 200 free units has created plenty of interest, and plenty of confusion too.
Tamil Nadu's 2026-27 Budget announced an increase in the free electricity entitlement from 100 units to 200 units for eligible households. Here is what that means.
What was announced?
- Earlier free entitlement: 100 units
- Announced entitlement: 200 units for eligible households
- Budget allocation: ₹1,545 crore
- Overall electricity subsidy: ₹18,860 crore
The word "eligible" is important. The report we checked does not list which households qualify, so check the official order or your electricity office.
Does this mean a zero bill?
Not always. Using up to the free limit may reduce your energy charges, but your bill can still include other charges, depending on the rules in force. If you use more than the free limit, you will pay for electricity according to the applicable tariff.
Tamil Nadu domestic consumers are generally billed once every two months, so check how the free units are applied in your billing cycle.
How to check your bill
- Find your consumer number on your bill.
- Check your units used for the billing period.
- See how much has been shown as a subsidy.
- Look at any additional charges.
- Compare it with your earlier bills.
- If something looks wrong, contact your section office or the official electricity consumer service.
Ways to reduce your bill
- Use LED bulbs and efficient fans.
- Raise your AC temperature by a couple of degrees.
- Switch off water heaters and pumps when not in use.
- Clean your refrigerator's coils and keep the door well sealed.
- Check your meter reading against what you actually used.
Rooftop solar option
The same Budget announced a state rooftop solar subsidy of up to ₹1 lakh for households, with ₹50 crore allocated. The central PM Surya Ghar scheme is separate, and you can read our guide to it on this website. Check the official rules on whether the two can be combined.
Stay safe from fake applications
When a new scheme becomes popular, fake websites and agents appear quickly. Do not pay anyone who promises guaranteed selection, and never share an OTP, UPI PIN or bank password. Wait for an official notification, then apply only through the official website or the concerned government office. Your local e-Sevai centre or Taluk office can also tell you whether applications have opened.
Common questions

Does it apply to shops? The announcement refers to households.
