Vetri Laptop Scheme and Free Bicycles: What Tamil Nadu Students Should Know

A laptop can change how a college student learns, and a bicycle can make the daily trip to school far easier. Tamil Nadu's 2026-27 Budget includes both, along with other support for students.

Here is what the Budget report says, and what you should ask at your school or college.

Vetri Laptop Scheme

  • Who: College students
  • Budget allocation: ₹2,000 crore

The report we checked does not list which colleges, courses or years are included. Your college office is the best place to check. Do not fill out online forms that promise a laptop unless your college or the government confirms them.

Puthiya Payanam Puthiya Vegam: Bicycles

  • Who: 5.32 lakh Class 11 students
  • Benefit: Bicycles with helmets and water bottles
  • Budget allocation: ₹277 crore

The Budget highlights refer to students in government and aided schools. Your school should be able to tell you when distribution will happen.

Other announcements for students

  • Breakfast scheme: Extended to Classes 6 to 8, covering 15.14 lakh students
  • Vetri Thiran Payirchi Thittam: Skill training for Class 12 pass students and graduates, with monthly support for eligible trainees
  • 7.5% medical quota: Continued for government school students
  • Hostels: New hostel development plans

What to ask your school or college

  1. Is my course or class included?
  2. Which documents are required?
  3. Does my attendance or enrolment status matter?
  4. Will my name be sent by the institution?
  5. When will distribution begin?

Keep your student ID, Aadhaar, and bank details updated, as they are commonly needed for student benefits. Scholarship applicants should also check our E-Sevai page for the National Scholarship Portal link.

Taking care of a laptop

If you receive a laptop, install updates, avoid pirated software, and use a strong password. Back up your assignments. Do not give the laptop to anyone offering to "unlock" it, and do not sell it if the scheme's rules prohibit it.

Stay safe from fake applications

When a new scheme becomes popular, fake websites and agents appear quickly. Do not pay anyone who promises guaranteed selection, and never share an OTP, UPI PIN or bank password. Wait for an official notification, then apply only through the official website or the concerned government office. Your local e-Sevai centre or Taluk office can also tell you whether applications have opened.

Common questions

Do students apply individually? The report does not say. Ask your institution first.

Are private college students eligible? The report does not confirm this.

Is the amount per student known? It is not stated in the report we read.
